Why can't I convert MPG and L/100km with a simple factor?
They are inverse measures: MPG is distance per fuel, L/100km is fuel per distance. Better mileage = higher MPG but LOWER L/100km, so the conversion is 235.215 ÷ value, not a multiplication.
Is a higher L/100km number better?
No — liters per 100 km is inverse, so lower is better. MPG is the opposite, which is why switching between them feels backwards.
How do I convert L/100km to MPG by hand?
Divide 235.215 by the L/100km value: 8 L/100km ≈ 29.4 MPG. The constant is 100 miles in km divided by liters per gallon.
