FAQ

How do I convert pounds to psi?

Pounds measure force while psi measures pressure, so you also need the area the force spreads over: psi = lbf ÷ in². A 100 lbf load on a 4 in² pad gives 25 psi.

Is 1 pound per square inch the same as 1 psi?

Yes — psi literally means pound-force per square inch. And since 1 lbf = 4.448 N, 1 psi ≈ 6.895 kPa.

Why can't a single factor convert lb to psi?

Because the same force can produce any pressure depending on area — a stiletto heel vs. a snowshoe. Cross-sectional area must be known, which is why this calculator asks for it.
