FAQ
How are late fees usually structured?
Two building blocks: a flat penalty (often 25–50) that fires the day after the grace period, plus monthly interest on the outstanding balance — commonly 1–1.5% per month. The two stack, which is why small invoices can carry triple-digit annualized rates.
What is a reasonable late fee?
Many jurisdictions cap penalties at a genuine pre-estimate of the creditor's loss; 1–1.5% monthly interest after a 10–14 day grace period is a common defensible standard. Fees that dwarf the actual cost of late payment can be challenged as penalties rather than damages.
Does the grace period matter?
Enormously. A 25-day-late payment with a 10-day grace is charged for 15 days — half the interest of a no-grace policy. Always check the contract's grace clause before assuming a due-date miss triggers fees immediately.
