FAQ

What is a good cholesterol ratio?

Most guidelines consider below 5 healthy and below 3.5 optimal. The ratio matters because high HDL can offset a raised total cholesterol.

How is the ratio calculated?

Simply divide total cholesterol by HDL cholesterol. A total of 200 with HDL 50 gives a ratio of 4.0.

Is the ratio better than raw numbers?

It is a useful summary, but doctors still look at LDL and non-HDL individually — never change medication based on the ratio alone.
