FAQ
Where do these ranges come from?
The Institute of Medicine (now National Academy of Medicine) guidelines, widely used by OB-GYNs in the US. Ranges are totals for full-term pregnancies; twins have separate higher ranges.
Why does recommended gain fall as BMI rises?
Higher pre-pregnancy fat stores cover more of the pregnancy's energy needs, so less additional gain is advised to protect both maternal metabolic health and baby outcomes.
What if I gain more or less than the range?
Many pregnancies land outside the range and still go well, but deviations are linked to higher risks of preterm birth, gestational diabetes, and delivery complications — discuss yours with your provider rather than self-correcting.
