FAQ

What does a 6/12 pitch mean?

The roof rises 6 units for every 12 units of horizontal run — a 26.57° angle, about 50% slope. It is one of the most common residential pitches in North America.

How do I calculate rafter length?

Rafter = run ÷ cos(angle), or run × multiplier where multiplier = 1/cos(θ). A 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of about 1.118, so a 5 m run needs a 5.59 m rafter (before any eave overhang).

What pitch is too steep or too flat?

Below 2/12 (≈9.5°) most shingle warranties are void and standing-seam metal or membrane roofing is required. Above 9/12 (≈36.9°) many crews charge a steep-roof premium and require harnesses.
