Your one-rep max (1RM) — the heaviest weight you can lift once with good form — is the reference point for all strength training. But testing it weekly is risky and exhausting. How the One Rep Max Calculator Works
Four established formulas convert a rep-max set into an estimated 1RM:
- Epley (1985): 1RM = w × (1 + reps/30)
- Brzycki (1993): 1RM = w × 36 / (37 − reps)
- Lombardi (1989): 1RM = w × reps^0.10
- Mayhew (1992): 1RM = w × 100 / (52.2 + 41.9 × e^(−0.055 × reps))
Each was derived from different lifter populations, so each is slightly biased. Averaging them cancels individual bias — expect the result within about 5% of a true max. Estimates are most accurate for sets of 10 reps or fewer.
Worked Example
You squat 225 lb for a hard set of 5:
- Epley: 225 × (1 + 5/30) = 262.5
- Brzycki: 225 × 36 / 32 = 253.1
- Lombardi: 225 × 5^0.10 = 259.4
- Mayhew: 225 × 100 / (52.2 + 41.9 × e^(−0.275)) = 255.0
Average: ≈ 258 lb estimated 1RM — and the table shows your 90% training weight is 230 lb, 80% is 205 lb, and so on.
Why Estimate Instead of Maxing?
True 1RM attempts demand perfect technique under maximal load — where injury risk peaks — plus heavy fatigue that disrupts the following week of training. Rep-max estimation (a grinder set of 3–8 reps at 80–90% effort) gives coaches and programs 95% of the programming value at a fraction of the risk. The one caveat: the farther your rep count drifts past 10, the more formula estimates diverge, because muscular endurance starts contaminating the math. A set of 5 is the sweet spot.
Using the Percentage Table
Strength programs speak in percentages of 1RM. The classic zones:

Tracking Progress Over Time
Estimated 1RM shines as a progress tracker. Re-test with the same lift and rep scheme every 4–8 weeks: if 225 × 5 becomes 235 × 5, your estimated max climbed from ~258 to ~269 lb without ever risking a max attempt. Over months, this trend line — not any single number — tells you whether your program is working. When your estimate rises, recalculate all your percentage-based training weights; grinding old numbers shortchanges progress.
