What is torque, exactly?

Torque is a force's turning effect: τ = F × r, where r is the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action. Pushing a spanner 0.3 m from the bolt with 200 N produces 60 N·m — same force at 0.6 m doubles it.

How do I convert N·m to ft-lbs?

Multiply by 0.7376: 100 N·m ≈ 73.8 lbf·ft. For a rough field check, remember that 1 N·m is about three-quarters of a foot-pound, so torque tables in imperial units always read smaller numbers.

Does an extension bar change torque wrench settings?

A straight extension along the drive axis doesn't change torque, but a crow's foot or lengthened lever does — multiply the set torque by L / (L + E), where L is wrench length and E is the added offset, to hit the true bolt torque.
