FAQ

How does C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ work?

The moles of solute are conserved during dilution. To make 100 mL of 0.5 M from 5 M stock: V₁ = (0.5 × 100) ÷ 5 = 10 mL stock + 90 mL water.

How do I perform a serial dilution?

Repeat one easy step: 1:10 followed by another 1:10 gives 1:100. Two moderate steps are more accurate than one extreme one.

Why measure final volume instead of adding volumes?

Volumes are not always additive — some liquid pairs contract when mixed. Always bring the solution up to the mark rather than adding two volumes together.
