How far apart should fence posts be?
2.4 m (8 ft) is the standard for wooden fences — wide enough to be economical, narrow enough that rails don't sag. Heavy-wind sites or privacy boards that catch the wind justify tightening to 2 m.
How deep do posts go?
Rule of thumb: bury one third of the above-ground height, and never less than 600 mm, so the concrete footing sits below frost line. A 1.8 m fence wants a 2.4 m post set 600 mm deep with ~2 bags of rapid-set concrete.
Why does the calculator add one extra post?
A run of N bays needs N + 1 posts — every bay is closed by a post at both ends. Forgetting the closing post (and gates counting as a bay) is the most common DIY shopping-list error.
