Why add a waste allowance?
Planks get cut to fit walls, staggered joints, and doorways — offcuts under about 30 cm usually can't be reused. 10% covers a straightforward rectangular room; use 15% for diagonal lays, lots of corners, or pattern-matched boards.
Should I buy an extra pack anyway?
If the shop sells single packs, round up one more for future repairs — dye lots change between production runs, and a matching spare plank years later is nearly impossible to find. Keep spares flat in a dry room.
Does laminate need underlay?
Yes, always — foam underlay smooths minor subfloor bumps, dampens footsteps, and many types add a moisture barrier over concrete. Budget it per square metre of actual room area; it generates no cutting waste.
