FAQ
Why is a nautical mile longer than a land mile?
One nautical mile is exactly one minute of latitude — 1/60th of a degree — which works out to 1,852 m. Because charts are drawn on latitude/longitude grids, distances in NM read straight off the chart's side scale.
How long is a cable?
One tenth of a nautical mile, about 185 m — historically the length of a ship's anchor cable. It still appears in pilot books for short harbour approaches and anchoring distances.
What is a fathom?
Six feet (1.829 m), the arm-span-based depth unit that nautical charts use for water depth. 'Mark twain' — the call at two fathoms, safe water — is where Samuel Clemens took his pen name.
