FAQ
Why do precious metals use troy ounces?
The troy system dates to medieval French markets and became the bullion standard. A troy ounce (31.103 g) is about 10% heavier than the kitchen-scale ounce (28.35 g) — mixing them up is the classic gold-buying mistake.
What is a pennyweight?
One twentieth of a troy ounce (1.555 g), abbreviated dwt from 'denarius weight'. It survives mainly in US jewellery scrap dealing — dealers quoting per dwt often look cheaper than per gram, so always normalise first.
What is a tola?
A traditional South Asian unit equal to 11.664 g, still the standard quote for gold bars in India, Pakistan, and the Gulf. The classic 'ten-tola bar' weighs 116.64 g, a hair under four troy ounces.
