FAQ
How do I calculate hours from clock times?
Convert both times to decimal hours (9:15 becomes 9.25), subtract start from end, then remove unpaid breaks. 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute lunch is 8.5 − 0.5 = 8 paid hours. If you clock out before midnight and start after it, the calculator adds 24 hours automatically.
When does overtime kick in?
In the US, federal law requires 1.5× pay past 40 hours per week; daily thresholds (often 8 h) apply in states like California. This calculator uses a daily threshold — set it to 24 to switch to a weekly-only rule and track the weekly total instead.
Why does my effective rate change?
Once overtime hours appear, the blended rate rises above your base pay — 8 regular hours at 18 plus 2 at 27 gives an effective 19.8/hour. Conversely, a long unpaid break drags it down: the effective rate is your true pay per hour on the clock.
