FAQ
Why are out-of-network ATM fees so high?
Two fees stack: the ATM operator charges for using its machine (about 3.50 on average), and your own bank adds a surcharge for leaving the network (2.50–3.50 more). Together that's 6+ per withdrawal — 15% of a 40 withdrawal.
How can I avoid ATM fees?
Use in-network machines (your bank's app maps them), get cash back at grocery checkout, or switch to a bank with fee rebates — many online banks refund all ATM fees. Failing those, withdraw larger amounts less often: the fee is flat, so 100 once beats 40 twice.
What about credit card cash advances?
Much worse. Advances add 3–5% of the amount, charge ATM fees on top, and accrue interest from day one — often above 25% APR with no grace period. A 100 advance can cost 8 in immediate fees plus a dollar a month in interest until paid off.
