FAQ
What is a good dividend yield?
For established companies, 2–4% is typical; much higher yields (8%+) can signal distress or an unsustainable payout. Compare yield with the payout ratio and dividend growth history, not alone.
Is dividend yield based on the price I paid?
Market yield uses the current price. Yield on cost uses your purchase price and grows as the company raises its dividend — it measures income relative to your original investment.
Are dividends taxed?
Usually yes. Qualified dividends are taxed at long-term capital gains rates, while ordinary (non-qualified) dividends are taxed as income. Sheltered accounts like IRAs may defer or exempt them.
