What is a z-score?
The number of standard deviations a value sits above or below the mean — the common currency for comparing scores from different scales.
How do I interpret the sign?
Positive means above the mean, negative below; a z of exactly 0 is the mean itself.
Is a high z-score unusual?
Roughly 95% of values in a normal distribution fall between z = −2 and z = 2, so magnitudes beyond that are uncommon.
