FAQ

How do I read a formula like CuSO4*5H2O?

The '*' (or '.') marks a hydrate: copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is one CuSO₄ unit plus five water molecules. Add the molar mass of each part — 159.61 for CuSO₄ plus 5 × 18.02 for the waters — to get 249.69 g/mol.

Does the calculator handle parentheses?

Yes. Ca(OH)₂ parses the OH group, doubles it, and attaches it to calcium, giving 74.09 g/mol. Nesting like Mg3(PO4)2 works too.

Molecular weight vs molar mass — what is the difference?

Chemists use them interchangeably for the sum of atomic weights in a formula. Strictly, molecular weight is dimensionless (relative mass) while molar mass is expressed in g/mol — numerically identical.
