How do I read a formula like CuSO4*5H2O?
The '*' (or '.') marks a hydrate: copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is one CuSO₄ unit plus five water molecules. Add the molar mass of each part — 159.61 for CuSO₄ plus 5 × 18.02 for the waters — to get 249.69 g/mol.
Does the calculator handle parentheses?
