FAQ

What is the percent yield formula?

Percent yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100. The theoretical yield comes from stoichiometry — the maximum product possible if every limiting reagent converts — while the actual yield is what you isolated.

Why is percent yield rarely 100%?

Side reactions, incomplete conversion, product left on glassware or filter paper, and purification losses all shave the result. Well-optimized reactions reach 80–95%; anything consistently below 60% usually hints at a procedural problem.

Can percent yield exceed 100%?

Chemically it cannot — a value above 100% means the product is contaminated (residual solvent, unreacted starting material, or wet sample) and the 'actual yield' is overstated.
